How to start a bike riding club in India
Start with 5–7 riders who already ride together, write 10 simple rules, and run a short breakfast ride before you think about logos or registration. Most Indian crews start informally on WhatsApp and only register a society later if they need a bank account or sponsors.
| Founding riders | 5–7 is enough to start |
|---|---|
| First ride | 60–100 km breakfast ride |
| Key roles | Admin, ride captain (lead), sweep, treasurer |
| Registration | Optional: Societies Registration Act needs 7+ members |
The 6 steps
- Decide what your club is: any bike or a cc/brand club, breakfast rides or touring.
- Find your founding 5–7 riders from colleagues, your service centre or Instagram.
- Write 10 rules (template below).
- Run your first ride: short, with a riders' briefing at the meetup.
- Assign roles: admin, ride captain, sweep, treasurer.
- Grow: open rides for newcomers, an Instagram page, a weekly ride post.
10 club rules template
- Full-face helmet and riding gear on every ride.
- No stunts on group rides.
- Zero alcohol before or during a ride.
- Start with a full tank.
- Lead sets the pace; nobody overtakes the lead.
- Sweep rides last and never leaves anyone behind.
- Staggered formation on highways, single file in ghats.
- Regroup only at agreed, safe spots.
- Costs split fairly and settled the same day.
- Respect locals, traffic rules and the places we ride to.
WhatsApp vs a ride app
WhatsApp is fine for chat. It breaks down for RSVPs ("maybe" isn't a headcount), live location (one bubble per rider) and money. A free ride app like MotoHeads gives the club a crew page, ride RSVPs, a live map of every rider and UPI cost split, and new members join from one WhatsApp link.
Ride it as a crew
Create a crew on MotoHeads, post the ride with the meeting point, and let everyone RSVP. On the day, everyone shows on one live map, so the lead always knows where the sweep is. Split fuel and food over UPI after. Free.

FAQ
Do I need to register a riding club in India?
No. Most crews start informally. Registration is only worth it if you want a legal entity, for example for a bank account or sponsorships. The common route is the Societies Registration Act, 1860, which needs at least 7 founding members to sign a memorandum filed with the state Registrar of Societies; some states ask for more.
How many riders should be on a club ride?
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends groups of about five to seven riders. Larger rides should split into sub-groups, each with its own lead and sweep.
How do clubs take new members?
Many let prospects join open rides first. Some are invitation-only, and some set engine-size minimums (for example 600cc+ or 650cc+ for superbike clubs).
