How to split bike trip costs with friends
Agree the split rules before the ride, log every expense as it happens, and settle over UPI the same evening. Split fuel and tolls per bike, and food, stays and backup vehicles per head.
| Fuel, tolls | Per bike (rider + pillion share) |
|---|---|
| Food, stay | Per head |
| Backup vehicle | Per head |
| Settle | Same day, over UPI |
Per bike vs per head
Each bike burns its own fuel, so fuel is fairest per bike; rider and pillion then share their bike's cost. Shared things everyone uses equally (homestay, backup car, guide) go per head.
Pillion riders: three fair formulas
- 50/50 of the bike: pillion pays half the bike's fuel and tolls.
- Fuel only: pillion pays half the fuel, the owner covers wear and tolls.
- Flat share: pillion pays a fixed amount agreed before the ride.
Worked example: 4 bikes, 6 riders, Bangalore → Coorg weekend
Fuel ₹1,400 per bike (4 bikes) is paid by each bike: bikes with a pillion split it ₹700 each. The homestay costs ₹9,000 for 6 people, so ₹1,500 each. Food and chai come to ₹4,800, so ₹800 each. One person paid the homestay and food upfront, so the other five each owe them ₹2,300 and settle by UPI before leaving Coorg. (Illustrative numbers.)
Splitwise, Tricount or a ride app?
Splitwise and Tricount are good general expense apps, but you still pay in a separate UPI app and mark it settled. MotoHeads keeps the expenses inside the crew and ride, so the riders who rode are already there, and everyone settles from their UPI app.
Ride it as a crew
Create a crew on MotoHeads, post the ride with the meeting point, and let everyone RSVP. On the day, everyone shows on one live map, so the lead always knows where the sweep is. Split fuel and food over UPI after. Free.

FAQ
Should fuel be split per bike or per rider?
Usually per bike, because each bike burns its own fuel. Rider and pillion then share their bike's cost. Shared costs like a homestay or backup vehicle are split per head.
Can Splitwise or Tricount send money over UPI?
Tricount's own India guide says there is no in-app UPI transfer: you log expenses in the app, then pay in GPay, PhonePe or Paytm and mark the debt settled.
When should a crew settle up?
The same day, before everyone heads home. Debts left for "Monday" are the ones that turn awkward.
