Group riding rules for bikers in India

Ride in a staggered formation with about 2 seconds to the rider directly ahead, put an experienced lead in front and an experienced sweep at the back, and agree regroup points before you start. Switch to single file in ghats, on curves and in poor visibility.

The 10 rules

  1. Brief before you ride: route, fuel stops, signals, regroup points, emergency contact.
  2. Lead knows the route and sets a pace the slowest rider can hold.
  3. Newest rider rides second.
  4. Sweep rides last, never overtakes the group, carries first-aid and tools.
  5. Staggered formation, ~2 s gap.
  6. Single file in ghats, curves, rain and fog.
  7. Never overtake the lead; overtake traffic one rider at a time.
  8. Regroup after junctions and tolls at a safe, wide spot, not on the road edge.
  9. Agree hand signals (see hand signals).
  10. If someone stops, the sweep stops with them and the group waits at the next safe spot.

Toll plazas and regrouping

Toll plazas are where Indian crews lose riders: different lanes, different queues. Name the regroup point (a dhaba or fuel pump 1–2 km after the toll) in the briefing, and let the sweep confirm everyone is through. A live group map removes the "kahan ho?" calls.

Expressways closed to bikes

Two-wheelers are not allowed on access-controlled expressways such as the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, the Delhi–Meerut Expressway main carriageway and the Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway main carriageway. Plan on the old highways or service roads.

Ride it as a crew

Create a crew on MotoHeads, post the ride with the meeting point, and let everyone RSVP. On the day, everyone shows on one live map, so the lead always knows where the sweep is. Split fuel and food over UPI after. Free.

FAQ

What is the correct formation for a motorcycle group ride?

Staggered: the lead rides one side of the lane and the next rider the other, alternating down the line, with about 2 seconds to the rider directly ahead and about 1 second to the rider diagonally ahead. Use single file with at least 2 seconds on curves, in poor visibility or on bad surfaces.

Who should ride lead and sweep?

Both should be experienced. The lead must know the route; the least-experienced rider goes second; the sweep rides last, never overtakes the group and carries the first-aid kit and tools.

Can motorcycles use Indian expressways on group rides?

Not access-controlled expressways. Two-wheelers are not permitted on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and courts have declined pleas to lift such bans. Use the old highways or service roads.
